Manager in Transport and Distribution

  • Location: Manchester, New Smithfield Market, Openshaw
  • Working pattern: Monday to Saturday, 2:00 am to 10:00 am business operating hours; exact contracted hours will be confirmed in the employment contract.
  • Salary: £40,000–£50,000 per annum, depending on experience and suitability
  • English language requirement: B2 CEFR or equivalent

About the role

APSE LTD is seeking a Manager in Transport and Distribution to coordinate the movement of fresh produce and related goods, support delivery reliability and improve the planning and control of operational distribution activities. The role will work across transport, distribution and other business functions to support efficient and scalable operations.

Key duties and responsibilities

  • Plan, coordinate and oversee transport and distribution activities supporting APSE LTD’s wholesale operations.
  • Organise delivery schedules, routes and vehicle allocation to support timely and efficient customer deliveries.
  • Coordinate drivers, distribution staff, forklift operators and porters involved in the movement and dispatch of goods.
  • Monitor delivery performance, service levels, delays, incidents and operational issues and take appropriate corrective action.
  • Work with purchasing, warehouse, sales and accounts functions to coordinate stock availability, dispatch requirements and delivery priorities.
  • Maintain appropriate transport, vehicle, driver and distribution records and management information.
  • Assist with fleet planning, vehicle utilisation, maintenance scheduling and operational cost control.
  • Promote safe and efficient working practices in transport, loading, unloading and distribution activities.
  • Identify operational bottlenecks and recommend improvements to routes, schedules, resource allocation and distribution processes.
  • Prepare management reports on transport performance, costs, delivery issues and service improvements for the directors.
  • Support the company’s expansion and future diversification by developing scalable transport and distribution procedures.
  • Work with external transport, logistics and service providers where required and monitor performance against agreed requirements.

Suitable candidate requirements

  • Degree or equivalent professional qualification in Transport Management, Logistics, Supply Chain, Operations, Business Management or a related discipline, or substantial relevant professional experience.
  • Relevant management experience in transport, logistics, distribution, fleet operations or a comparable operational environment.
  • Practical knowledge of route planning, delivery scheduling, vehicle utilisation and distribution coordination.
  • Experience supervising drivers and operational staff and coordinating work across multiple functions.
  • Strong organisational, problem-solving and decision-making skills, with the ability to respond to time-sensitive operational issues.
  • Experience maintaining operational records, analysing transport performance and controlling distribution costs.
  • Good understanding of health and safety, vehicle compliance and safe working practices relevant to transport and distribution operations.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder-management skills and the ability to work with directors, staff, customers and suppliers.
  • Ability to work independently and implement structured transport and distribution processes in a growing SME environment.
  • English language ability at B2 CEFR or equivalent.
